KENNETH ANGER (b.1927) is an American filmmaker who has been working on avant garde and experimental film since the mid 70s. He considers his films spells and within Hollywood there arose an urban myth that his work was cursed. Anyone participating would be damned. His films do in fact extend off screen as many of his actors and crew have been convicted of real crimes of murder affiliated with the Charles Manson family.
Similar to surrealist film, Anger’s most poignant work is experimental and non-linear. “Demon Brother” is a good example. The viewer is immediately propelled into a dark and deeply disturbing environment without any reference point or stable start. "Anger does not use a narrative-based style, but rather lyrically explores themes of ritualistic transformation and transfiguration. His films are imbued with a baroque splendor stemming from the heightened sensuality of his opulent colors and imagery. They are often accompanied by a haunting soundtrack, composed by renowned musicians such as Mick Jagger and Bobby Beausoleil."
