THE SITUATIONIST INTERNATIONAL was a political group of avant-garde thinkers in the 1950s and 1960s It involved marxists as well as surrealist ideals and combined politicians and artists alike. A central figure to the situationist movement was Guy Debord whose essay,“Society of the Spectacle" embodies a lot of the early situationist ideology.
"The SI was to attempt an analysis of the modern world from the point of view of everyday life. ... The critique of everyday life is not intended to be purely an analysis; it is supposed to lead on to a revolutionary praxis. ... [On SI analysis of consumerism:] This process causes an accelerating degradation of everyday life."
