SOPHIE CALLE (b. 1953) is a French artist. Calle’s work is distinguished by its use of arbitrary sets of constraints, and evokes the French literary movement of the 1960s known as Oulipo. Her work frequently depicts human vulnerability, and examines identity and intimacy. She has often used herself and her personal life as stages for her art experiments. Fascinated with storytelling and being a protagonist in her own narratives, she has collaborated with author (and her lover) Paul Auster to blend the parameters of storytelling and reality. Calle defines the effort as "one of the many ways of mingling fact with fiction or how to try and become a character out of a novel." Calle's work is a mix of character and raw autobiographical content challenging notion of Biographical Fallacy. |
