killing fish.
The allegory of the train from a new yorker article: You are standing by a track where a train is rushing towards 5 people. If it hits them, it will kill them. But there is a lever. If you switch the lever the train will change tracks and kill just one person standing on the other side... Are you responsible for the death of five if you do nothing? or did you kill someone directly by switching the lever? This project is made of two large tubes of glass filled with water and each one containing a betta fish. Each jar has a hole in it. As the water spilled out of the glass the viewer can observe the tangible passage of time and the fish's eminent death. One plug is provided. The viewer needed to choose: either to let two fish die. or choose one. The fish are Betta fighter fish and could not be combined. As the decision is being made water spills onto the floor, making a messy puddle in the classroom, adding to the viewers discomfort.
